What if the cups we used, touched us back? Taking inspiration from the tactile surfaces we interact with daily, Pinch founder, Tricia Lim looks toward the subtle transformation of everyday touch. This commissioned series of cups bulge, dot and dent, confronting the owners’ own hands as their own fingers curl around the surface textures of each cup. In an experiment with form and texture, Lim alters our relationship with a simple mug, causing our touch and grasp to be more pronounced on each sip.
Produced in collaboration with Pinch Ceramics Studio, Singapore.
Pinch is a Singapore artist-run studio dedicated to the pleasure of working with clay. Founded by Tricia Lim, it’s a bright, airy and welcoming space. Named after the act of pinching, it is one of the earliest known methods of shaping clay. It is visceral, you rub the earth and feel its fine grains. Squeeze it between your fingers. Its touch is cold and firm against your skin. Pressing, wedging, rolling and pinching, you transform a lump of clay into vessels and conjured shapes - all of your own making and out of your own imagination.
